From the Front: Avatar
Anonymous writes "AVATAR 90. Avatar harkens to the distant past and most likely is the oldest Multi-user Graphic Dungeon game that is still actively played. Avatar is hosted on the NOVANET (NN) system (the modern day derivative of the original PLATO* system) and totally free access has been granted to anyone who signs up. Are you up to the challenge of facing the ORIGINAL MUD? Up to the challenge of learning a new interactive system that is completely different than any other game you have ever played? Be warned. The learning curve is steep. Download the software, and your PC becomes a terminal emulator, and your first job becomes learning how to navigate a 2003 edition of a 1960's vintage educational mainframe system. Do not despair. Help is right around the corner. www.avatar90.com has links to key shortcuts, NN history, NN portal software, Avatar etiquette, Avatar FAQ's, and links to other sites built around NN games. Avatar 90 offers 11 classes and 13 guilds in a non-PK environment, totally free of bothersome meddling from IMMORTALS. Even by modern standards, the database is HUGE. The dungeon consists of 30 by 30 tiles. Each level is comprised of 64 tiles. There are 15 levels in the dungeon. That produces a matrix of 864K different possible encounter areas! In the avatar system you can train to reach a maximum level of 999. Don't be in a rush to get there. Experienced gamers will spend 4 months or more reaching level 500! Attributes are the standard 6, and can be raised through the use of stat building items. The "quest" for stats will consume the entire first phase of you Avatar journey. Avatar 90 is a fully functional, fully interactive, multi-user game with a rather unique twist. Parties are required to best the dungeon, however with the advent of free "non prime time gaming" you can sign-up for multiple user accounts. This means that you can easily run 4 or more logons from a single PC, and thereby create you own entire party. Does this mean that you will be totally on your own? Not. Avatar 90 has the friendliest, most NEWBIE friendly player base of any MUD I have ever played. Additionally, Avatar 90 has an incredible on-line help lesson that can be accessed in NEWBIE mode (follow the instructions for First Time users) or will allow seasoned veterans to skip to exactly the information that they wanted, bypassing all the NEWBIE stuff. Pros-Friendly players, Amazing retro game from the days before there were PC's, Large database, can't build chars in 2 days, NO IMMORTAL INTERFERENCE, No PK, Well-developed documentation and help files. Cons-Steep learning curve to master the system, and the game, access only during off peak hours (2200-0600 M-Th; 2200-0015 Fr; 0000-2359 Sa-Su; ---all times are Central Time,) No animations, quests are very basic, the game is limited to a "kill the monster and take their stuff" format. Final word: If you are up to the challenge, Avatar can provide you hundreds if not thousands of hours of enjoyable retro-style gaming. Don't accept the challenge unless you are willing to put in 20 or 30 hours of somewhat frustrating play as you master the system and try to gather stats. Be advised that your first chars will be throwaway chars. Don't get attached to them, since their only purpose is to let you learn the game and gather up all the attribute raising books and gems that you will need to start you "real chars." Players will help you, but make certain that you read the help file before asking questions. Visit www.avatar90.com and print out the keyboard shortcuts, as well as the other NOVANET system info. See ya in the game! "1000 points of light," Lord High Blacksmith of the distinguished guild of RAVAGERS, Helper of NEWBIES, slayer of Dragons, and opener of treasure chests. *PLATO was the educational mainframe system operated by the University of Illinois from 1960-1983. The original Avatar program was copyright 1979. "
