I love this game! It is WAY too hard. That is my criticism. Well, also it’s a little cryptic, dropping you right into the shopping interface, which could be much easier to follow. But once you figure that out (which isn’t nearly as bad as many other games I’ve had the misfortune of reviewing), you’re in for very intense, very fun shooter action with gorgeous graphics. And the shopping is great too, with a variety of nifty weapons and, due to the difficulty, a puzzle of sorts to figure out what weapons you can equip just to survive. - MH

This aptly named scrolling shooter will fill your every orifice with jets ‘n guns as advertised. (Orifices of your ship) At one time I considered myself pretty skilled at 2d shooters but this game reduced me to tears so I set the difficulty to “Easy” for the first time, well, pretty much ever. One tip is be sure to click the start mission button and don’t fly for ten minutes in the ‘weapon testing area’ like some moron I won’t mention did. Oh, and it’s a fantastic game with great graphics and music. - SR

Holy Majumbo! An awesome looking 2D shooter, with one of the finest game soundtracks I've heard in a long time. Ok, the soundtracks by Machinae Supremacy, and I am a bit of a fan of their music, so I'm totally biased. :D. The killing is satisfying, not to sound uncivilized. It's great to watch enemy aircraft dive into obstacles, enemy soldiers, or chemical waste bins (drugs!?), in turn causing explosions and more chaos. Main beef is it's INCREDIBLY HARD! Beating the first level on medium was a task best left to insane shmup-a-holics, which makes me wonder who hard difficulty is for. It sports beautiful particle effects (if not overly used), awesome production values, and did I mention I really like the soundtrack? First Impression 10 (Awesome), Lasting Impression 8 (Hard, and it wouldn't be fair to let a soundtrack by a favorite band completely decide the score of a game). - MK

Revenge of the Chicken

Fun, very well presented, but really pointless. This is definitely not a bad game, in fact it's a good game, but it really pushes the mindlessness of arcade play to the limit, testing your dexterity well, but not laying a finger on your other mental faculties. Don't forget the part about it being fun though. It's rather good, but not great. - MH

Despite the name it's a rather tame game that plays a lot like Centipede. Given the general indie fascination with Breakout/Arkanoid clones, it's nice to see another classic that I've all but forgotten. It's well produced with nice cartoony art and music. The controls work (mouse based). It has an interesting special shot that actually aligns the shots vertically with your character (although I thought it was a bug at first). Not a lot of variety or depth to the gameplay, but it's nice for a short little romp. First Impression 6, Lasting Impression 6 (Chicken). - MK

If Road Runner and Centipede had a baby (and drank a lot during the pregnancy) this would be the result. It’s a well done mouse-controlled arcade game that packs enough power-ups and levels to keep you interested. I ended up liking this much more than I thought I would. Beware of carpal tunnel syndrome. - SR

Roads Of Fantasy

Technical issues, crashed upon clicking "Start Game". - MH
In this game you move around a ball to go under gates and touch a pole to complete each level. I passed seven or so ‘levels’, each in under fifteen seconds and then abruptly was kicked back to windows and given a “register to see more stuff” message. Huh? The levels I saw are just far too small and simple and the fact that the ball is lacking basic physics stops this from being interesting at all. I mean, if you park the ball on the sharpest angle you can find, you won’t roll down. Experienced some bugs. - SR
This ones a rather normal Marble Madness/Monkey Ball clone. There are some hills, but the game seems to prefer flatter maps. The announcer with his thick accent is rather amusing (and vaguely familiar), and the hip hop'ish music is equally as entertaining. You control a blue Amiga ball, rather than a marble/monkey/hamster/gerbil as seen in other similar games. It sports a toon shading effect on all the objects, which looks ok. The game plays pretty good, but if you've played the other's, then you're not missing much. First Impression 7 (Yo yo yo!), Lasting Impression 4 (rolling rolling rolling...). - MK

Real Ball

This is what 3D breakout games should be! Not that this is all that great. It's just like a 2D breakout game, but it takes advantage of the 3rd dimension in some simple little ways to add to that - some bricks are stacked up (but not giant structures of them that take 4 hours to go through), and there's a fun semi-physics-based effect of bricks getting tossed around by explosions and a special powerup. This is not a stand-out game, but it's solid and the first 3D breakout game I haven't been bored to death by. - MH

Yes sir, another Breakout/Arkanoid. Something I do really like about this one is the physics. This game has stacked boxes, and some boxes are explosive, so it in turn causes other blocks to roll over and collide with other boxes. It's pretty cool to see. Beyond that, it's your standard Breakout/Arkanoid clone with nice graphics and music. First Impression 7 (Ooh! Physics!), Lasting Impression 5 (False advertising, that ball ain't real). - MK
Not a badly done breakout, little weak on the graphical side. Seems to include all the basics, fireball, shooting paddle, multi-ball and many block types. Level design seems uninspired, nothing really new here. I liked the rocket launcher that would shoot the last block for you. There are neat physics but they just don’t impact the game much. - SR

Machine Hell

An acceptable but very uninspiring top-down shooter. First time I've seen a shooter that put life meters on the regular enemies Also the first time I've seen one that gave you limited ammo on your primary weapon (but so much that there's really no chance to see what happens when you run out). This is not a horribly broken game in any way, but it is also not compelling in any way. - MH

This is a 3d upward moving shooter with 2d game play. I think this could be a great game with some more polish, but as is, lacks somewhat. Weak sound effects and missing a lot of visual flair that should be in a game like this, for instance, hitting something with a missile and just having the missile disappear instead of a fantastical explosion. This game needs a little more Jet’s ‘n guns formula in it. Bosses and not losing your power-ups when you pass a level would be nice too.- SR
Welcome to Terminator 3, the 2D shooter. Unlike another shooter this month, killing isn't very satisfying. You repeatedly shoot, watch a little life bar go down, and are greeted with a rather tame explosion with a couple pieces of debris. It was nice to have a game use my laptops native 1920x1200 resolution, however its hardly worth bragging about. Weapon's aren't all that interesting. One you get the level 4 upgrade, it actually get's harder to kill things, as you go from 3 forward shots to a single forward and 2 diagonal ones, which doesn't sound all that bad, but the playfield is so large it barely possible to hit things with the diagonals and do enough damage to kill them. The game also feels REALLY slow. The art is still not too bad, low poly 3d models with a nice post apocalyptic look in the menus, and the audio is nice. First Impression 6, Lasting Impression 2 (Zzzzz). - MK

Crusaders of Space

Hey, two games in the same month with uncalled-for life meters! And on top of that, it has the silly voices from Jam XM! And in a 3rd similarity zone, it's a Space Invaders game like Xeno Assault is! It's like this is the ghost of game reviews past come to haunt me. This game is tolerable, just like Machine Hell and Xeno Assault, but if I had to rank the three, it would be last. Not sure which of the other two would be first. None are great, none are awful. - MH

A pretty standard Space Invaders clone. The audio is well done, and does give the game a cool atmosphere, ... that is until you understand what the pilot is actually saying (another thick accent). Graphics are your pretty standard good quality pre-rendered deal. It's rather annoying that you lose your weapons every level, especially since it forces you to collect any falling weapons before it ends the round. The game does however do a good job of shaking, so the kills do feel pretty good. Not bad. First Impression 7, Lasting Impression 5. - MK
Space Invaders meets Galaga. I really like the techno music and the graphics are decent. Not sure I approve of the “Alawar guy” vocals that seem to get tacked on to a lot of Alawar released games recently. The action is solid enough but there just isn’t enough here to give it higher than an average rating. - SR

Xeno Assault

Another perfectly ordinary top-down shooter, this one in the style of Space Invaders (Galaga, etc). Some detriments: one of the bonus weapons (the Fixed Turret) is vastly better than any of the others (resulting in me dodging the others eventually), and the graphics are muddy and dull enough that at least on my laptop screen, it was often hard to spot the enemies (nevermind that swarms of smaller enemies zoom around the background during play). Not a bad game, basic fun shooting, but nothing to crow about either. - MH

Suspiciously, when I first saw the game's icon, I swear I was staring at the XBox logo. As for the game itself, it's your standard space invaders'ish clone with many waves of enemies. It sports some nice 3D graphics used as 2D, some cool weapons and particle effects, and a demoscene'ish sounding soundtrack mixed in with a guitar solo driven metal track for a boss fight/title. Killing is satisfying (nice explosions and shaking). It's not a bad game, but it does lack variety. All it seems to introduce is after a couple levels, a meteors shower, which were then reused many times for at least half of the stages (up to level 10), and a boss fight at the end. First Impression 7 (Guitar Solo! It's no Jets n Guns/Machinae Supremacy, but it's ok), Lasting Impression 5 (Not a lot of variety). - MK
Woah, deja-vu! Space Invaders meets Galaga again, same formula for the missions: ten stages of killing little guys and a boss at the end. Xeno is a bit more graphically polished than Crusaders Of Space. It ports a neat beam weapon that shoots at intervals, it’s fun to mow down baddies with it. The action is good but very, very repetitive. - SR

Pow Pow's Great Adventure

I don’t feel right giving such a low score to such a unique game that had so much effort put into it, but I wouldn’t feel right recommending it either, so I’m stuck. This game is incredibly confusing, with a tremendously bad play interface in many ways, and just a generally glitchy style that makes you feel like you’re controlling a paper cutout. You can definitely have classic head-stomping platform fun with this game, you’ll just have to get over a lot of stuff to do it. It’s ambitious, with graphical cutscenes that feature good voice acting and one of the most offensive depictions of a woman I’ve seen in a video game, which is quite a feat. - MH

A nicely produced platformer. Biggest surprise is the quality of the voice acting. I'd swear the dialog is straight from a Saturday morning cartoon. The game looks pretty good, though inconsistencies in the art outline thicknesses detract from the look of the cinematics and some of the in game art. The game does some interesting things with the perspective, specifically it rotates the playfield giving you more level to play. The PDA, while unattractive is an interesting addition. The game is repetitive like so many other platformers, though it does feature an interesting bonus stage and some unique to each 'world' effects (snow plowing, etc...). First Impression 9 (Nice voice acting!), Lasting Impression 6. - MK

In Pow Pow, you get transported to a world of square ledges where this really annoying girl won’t stop harassing you. I kept looking for the power-up that would let me disembowel her. I like the extra attention to story and the voice acting but the game itself is in a woeful technical state. I ran into Director errors, glitchy graphics, magic ledges that let me fall through, slow downs on a 3.0 gz machine and repeatedly forgetting my custom keys in the same session. A thid of my deaths were from bugs, very frustrating. I think this could be a great game but right now it feels like an alpha, needs a lot of polish and a “stab in the eye through pda” gem. - SR

Cosmobots

A really great game – one of the very few demos I just kept going back to whenever I wanted to kill a little time. The gameplay is so simple that it’s just a pleasure to breeze along and give it a go. It can be fairly easy (at higher levels) to end up in a state where it’s nearly impossible to make progress and you just keep dying over and over. I would’ve really appreciated something to help you with such a situation (maybe just making enemies that hit you blow up along with you). When will I give out a 10? Who knows, but boy that will be SOME game. MH

Hey, now this is a cool little game. It's essentially a variation of Qix, where instead of drawing lines from the edges, you draw lines from the center. Given the game controls with the mouse, it's easy and intuitive to play. Graphics are very nice, and in some cases remind me vaguely of Metroid. Audio is nice too, with a techno/almost trance'ish soundtrack. Solid game. First Impression 10 (!!), Lasting Impression 6 (oh wait, it's Qix). - MK
This is a Qix-like inspired game with some remarkable features – you can freely move around anywhere on the screen without worrying about danger until you start a partition. I think what makes this game really work is the amount of levels, (577! cough, random generation algorithm, cough) the absolutely brilliant graphics and maybe most importantly, the fun power ups and interesting enemies; like the ones that can damage your structure in fascinating ways. Very addicting. - SR

Soda Pipes

A well-done puzzle game. It takes the well-worn pipe puzzle and gives it some variety, both in different game modes, and in the main Adventure mode, where each level has different goal to keep things interesting and mixed. It also has a nice art style. The isometric perspective can make seeing where the pipe piece is going to go a little iffy at times, but it looks good and isn't often a problem. There's really nothing major I can complain about with this game, other than it being a pipe puzzle game. So if you like those, I recommend it. - MH

A nicely done clone of pipe dream. I do really like the graphics in the game, very... urr.. juicy. The perspective is rather interesting as well. Some of the levels are hard, probably harder than most casual gamers can handle, as it requires you to move and think quickly. Other than the difficulty, it's a fun little game. First Impression 8, Lasting Impression 6. - MK

This game takes the familiar them of building a pipeline but mixes up the game play with different challenges like limited pieces and multiple flows. Something about the graphics is just tasty and made me hungry. Sadly, I got frustrated and didn’t finish the demo. - SR

On the Oche

A very good game of darts that suffers from the same problem that some of the pool games I reviewed before do - it assumes you know the rules of the underlying sport! It took me several losses to fully understand the rules of 501 (note to newbies: your final throw must be on the double-point row), and it makes no effort to guide you along. It's funny because it explains in intimate detail how to actually throw the darts, but it completely ignores why you are throwing them. Seems to be a common problem in real-sports games. Despite the lack of comprehension, it's quite fun to play. - MH

I don't play a lot of darts games. I don't know if many people do. Despite, On the Oche would be the finest one I've played to date. The theme is great, so is the art, and the sound and music is perfect, like watching an 80's sport event with the cheesy theme music and everything. It features a control scheme similar to many other parlor (bowling) and golf games, clicking several times to activate accuracy and power. It has some very nicely drawn cartoony avatars, and pretty much flawless 3d graphics of darts and dart board. The game is tough. The opponents seem to have this mystical ability to perfectly finish a round every time, despite my ability to score the correct number of remaining points (according to how I used to understand how to play darts). Obviously, how I was brought up playing darts was wrong. After being emotionally ruined by my opponent half a dozen times, I eventually got the hang of the game. First Impression 7 (Hard! How is this fun?), Lasting Impression 8 (Ahh, I see... I need to be skilled). - MK

If you’re like me and dumb, you’ll want to know Oche (pronounced liked Hockey without the h) is a British way to say darts. This is the best Oche simulation I’ve ever played. It’s also the only Oche simulation I’ve ever played. It sports tournaments, neat special games, playing with a friend and the ABSOLUTE COOLEST FEATURE EVER: Importing custom pictures to throw darts at people you hate! (Mai-Mai from Pow-Pow) It’s fun, but I’ve got to wonder why the 3d darts aren’t textured. - SR

Galactic Gladiator

Another in the November vertical-shooter crowd. This is my least favorite of the bunch, with unimpressive graphics and very wimpy feeling weapons. It also has a very strange tendency to try to act like it's a spaceflight simulator rather than a simple arcade shooter - it still plays like an arcade shooter, power-ups and all, but it's got shields, hull strength, a detailed manual, limited missiles you can toggle from dual to single fire, and a menu system that looks straight out of Wing Commander. It's just a fine little dose of intergalactic cognitive dissonance. - MH

Well, I'll give it a point for having a name that would fit nicely on an oldskool Commodore 64 or other old computer system game. Sadly for Galactic Gladiator, it doesn't have a lot going for it. Killing is uncomfortable rather than satisfying. I almost felt sorry for shooting the baddies. Unlike another game this month, this one does sport a nice array of weapons, but the initial weapon feels extra worthless, and I seemed to be stuck with it really often. Collecting power-ups, I was confused ... almost concerned that just hurt my ship as they rather violently explode as you pick them up. Music, while not terrible, sounds like rather plain midi. Compared to Machinehell, it actually feels slower, which isn't a good feeling for a shmup. Graphics aren't bad, minimalistic, and the animation of the ship turning is smooth. First Impression 3, Lasting Impression 3. - MK

Just awesome. But let me enumerate my complaints! The power-ups are virtually impossible to tell apart other than "good", "bad", or "indifferent", and in a similar note of confusion, there’s so much stuff falling from the sky at random that you often don’t know what it is, or you miss the ball amongst it. But that’s okay! This game is amazing! There are 100 levels and except a few standard breakout type standouts, they’re all totally unique and weird. I had a tremendous problem pulling myself away because I just wanted to see one more level. In addition, I will just mention one other wonderful innovation this brings to the genre: the Graviton. That alone injects so much skill and play improvement, I expect it will be a breakout standard within 6 months. It also does wonders for "Last Brick Syndrome", which is a terrible ailment of such games. Okay, one more comment: great balance – levels are all just the right length, no insta-quickies, no drawn out boredom. So very very close to a 10. -MH

Apparently every Breakout/Arkanoid clone has some feature or "features" that's suppose to make it the greatest one yet. I always have my doubts, but this one's pretty good. Thus far for me, each level has been unique. We started out with a field of size changing circles, which gives an interesting dynamic when the balls bounce off them. Next came you standard level, with hex'ish shaped blocks, and some bizarre snake like creatures swimming around. Then came a neato level boxes all attached with springs, that after you detach the springs, can bounce off your little paddle. Then came a level with lots of tiny dots, almost pacman like, and pinball bumpers. Finally a matching game where you must use your ball to change the color of blocks in a row to match rows. This game is mad! I had to cut myself short or I'd run out of time to do these reviews tonight. The music is very well done, ambient and catchy tunes. The graphics are very nice, with an array of ships to choose from including several that look sorta like cute animals. Paddle is a rounded front shield much like Ricochet, but it deforms based on the powerups you have. It's a nice game. Initial Impression 7 (Arkanoid/Breakout clone, neat graphics), Lasting Impression 9 (What the heck! Each of these levels isn't just a different arrangement of blocks!!?!). - MK
When is the last time you played a breakout game that has a level theme of miniature space invaders, complete with shuffling ships, neat sounds and a mother ship that zips by that you can nail for power-ups? This ain’t your momma’s breakout, it’s off the charts wild with a stunning engine that supports a huge variety of tricks that are put to good use in its inventive levels. The physics are astonishing, this is the first breakout game I’ve seen where the ball itself can change shape. (not just get bigger and smaller) Flawless. - SR

Super DXBall

This is Arkanoid at it’s most arkanoidiest. It’s a very well-made game, with a really nice style to it, but it offers nothing new, and in fact is far more basic than any of the other 4 million breakout games I've reviewed for the Monthly Round-Up - just the most generic power-ups, no special features, but that basic stuff is implemented well. You can’t go wrong with this game for basic breakout action, but if you want something more unique, I’d recommend going somewhere else! - MH

Sigh... Breakout/Arkanoid clone. What I do like about this one is it's demoscene themed. The music is very cool, oldskool demoscene'ish. The graphics are good, with many fancy shaded fonts and effects like seen in numerous demoscene intro's and demo's. Solid. Down side, it's another Breakout/Arkanoid clone. Aparently one of these days I'm going to have to acknowledge Breakout/Arkanoid as a genre (game tunnel already does). First Impression 7 (Shiny), Lasting Impression 5. - MK

The classic is back. I’ve got to say, this is the cleanest, most polished breakout around. It just exudes a gentle smoothness. (Geek note, Mike Welch’s great 2d engine was also used in CosmoBots) The levels are beautiful. I’d label it ‘old school’ when compared to BreakQuest. It provides a more classic experience. People confused and dizzy by BreakQuest’s out of control particle systems will find refuge and sanity here. - SR

Mike Hommel is known for his hilarious and bizarre games. Though his site claims that all his games are just 'dumb fun' you'll find that they are some of the more interesting games around, and will eat hours away from your life without you realizing where they all went.
SR - Seth Robinson - Robinson Technologies
Seth has spent the last fourteen years making odd games, including designing and programming many independent titles such as the BBS hit Legend Of The Red Dragon, the multiplayer Flash based web game Funeral Quest, IGF finalists Teenage Lawnmower and Dungeon Scroll and the cult classic RPG Dink Smallwood.
MK - Mike Kasprzak - Sykhronics
Coming from a game console background, Mike's responsible for bringing to the market such oddities as Secret Agent Barbie for Gameboy Advance, The Emperor's New Groove for Gameboy Color, and several other top girl branded games (not that he's bragging). In indie land, he seeks redemption. Mike's best known for his "cute but not girly" hamster blasting game, PuffBOMB.
