Widget TD Review

Turret defense games are a genre that doesn't lend itself well to innovation. The idea of each game is SUPPOSED to be the same, and it's okay if they feel nearly identical in terms of gameplay.

Widget TD doesn't try to bring anything new to the formula, for the most part. The basics/pretty much the whole game are identical to every other game of the genre: buy turrets to defend your base. Bad guys crawl along a path that leads to your base. Turrets shoot bad guys as the...

Comedy in games is a rough business. It requires a good writer, which tends not to match the skill set of either a programmer or an artist, the two corner stones of game creation. It's no shock that plot, comedy, and intrigue in games have all taken a back seat to particle effects and fancy 3D cut scenes.

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Well, after playing Big Brain Wolf, I'm not really any closer to having luposliphobia (look it up), but I certainly feel humbled. Why? Because Big Brain Wolf made me think harder than almost any game I've played. And it hurt.

Deadly Sin Review

Once more, an RPG-maker game is under the microscope here at Gametunnel. Deadly Sin is much like every other old-school-style RPG out there, so if you're a rabid fan of the genre, this review probably won't sway your opinion much. The game is a decent specimen, but it's got some glaring problems holding it back.

As with every other RPG of this sort, motivation comes from the story. Deadly Sin tells the tale of Lorelai, an orphan (of course) who is sent to deliver a lett...

At this point, I think that we (the independent gaming community) have just about perfected the classic RPG genre. There has been a swell in RPG-maker RPGs lately, and they've been only increasing in quality. A fine example would be the latest in the Aveyond series, Aveyond: Lord of Twilight.

Tradewinds Odyssey is a game that takes a little bit from a bunch of genres: resource management, strategy, adventure, and even some RPG elements are thrown into the mix. It's hard to pin down exactly what T.O. is, and that's why it stands out. You don't know what to expect, especially during your first run through, but it stays accessible throughout.

Conquest is a turn based tactical strategy game in the most basic form. It is not, for those afraid, a wargame. I would put this game one tactical step higher than Risk, which is about the least tactical strategy game there ever was. That isn't to say Conquest is without merit or appeal, heck, look at how popular Risk is!

At first glance, Light of Altair seems to be a casual little resource-management game in space. Then, you play the game and watch in horror as your colonies fall to economic pieces. Yeah. That happens. Basically, Light of Altair takes a concept that normally would encourage laid-back gameplay and gives it a good ol' injection of STRESS (in a good way).

You, being the upstanding citizen that you are, do not call the authorities. That would be absurd. No, instead you (along with your science club pals) decide to wage war against the invaders. Dark Souls is an RPG that sticks it to the man: no funny business, just classic turn-based battles and an epic storyline. If this sounds familiar, it probably is, since that's the same formula that old-school RPGs have been using for a while now. If it isn't broken, don't fix it, right?

The game is made using RPG Maker XP, so it's very much like playing a traditional...

Oftentimes, games borrow ideas from one another. While it's a perfectly fine thing to do, there's a problem: they all tend to feel the same. For example, while I played Virtual Families (from developer Last Day of Work), I couldn't help feeling like I was playing a knock-off of The Sims.
