In the midst of the hubbub that was Independent Games Festival, I was fortunate enough to yank a few developers away from their games and talk to them. No easy task, I assure you.

My first victim was "Mr. Phosphorous" of the development team Digital Eel. Their game Brainpipe had won the Excellence in Audio award this year, making it the second year in a row that Digital Eel had won the award. Here's what he had to say....

Take-Aways
- San Francisco is sometimes foggy...which might just delay your flight!
- Don't make the technical a road to making your game, use the technical as the
game
- You're not a brand leader, so be a brand challenger
- Web Games will displace consoles as the primary way games are played
- Contract work may not be glamorous, but it doesn't just create funds, it
builds experience you can use
- If you release the demo a few weeks after releasing the game ...

every year, but this year one thing stood out to me. The
student showcase games were really good.

I don't want to disparage any of the student showcase games of the
past. There have been some real gems including games such as
            the Flow precursor

Innovation Goes Mainstream

One of the things that Indie games have been known for over the years is innovation. They have been the

playground of experimental and niche, they've provided the nurturing of ideas that mainstream gaming was too

busy to notice.

Over the last few years, perhaps starting with nintendo's focus on innovation with the release of the DS,

innovation has become more and more mainstream. I remember well the Game Developer's Conference of two

years ago wh...

This year's festival gave little surprises with Darwinia taking most of the

Independent Games have continued to find their voice, though with the increase
in the number of Independent developers has lead to a proliferation in

the third time I traveled to California to spend a weekend going to lectures,
talking to other developers, eating bad food, and hearing about new

almost always held back for E3). The only real difference this year for me is
